Alcove Units & Shelving in Dundee and Angus

Chimney-breast alcoves filled properly, scribed to walls that are never square.

Dundee and Angus is a county of sandstone tenements, jute-era terraces and coastal town housing. That is exactly the kind of building stock a run of alcove units has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.

How we approach it

A run of alcove units is a permanent part of the building, so it is worth setting out properly. We take the survey, agree the drawings, machine the parts in the workshop and fit in Dundee and Angus in one visit wherever the programme allows.

How we build it

Moisture matters more than most people expect. Timber is conditioned before machining, and anything going into a kitchen, utility or bathroom is specified in materials that will not swell at the bottom edge. That is why the base of a well-made unit still closes cleanly after five winters.

Finish and materials

Every finished job gets a short handover: what the surface is, how to clean it, and how to adjust a hinge if a door drops after the heating has been on for a season. Adjustment is normal in timber and takes about two minutes once you know which screw to turn.

Straight answers

Alcove Units & Shelving in Dundee and Angus — common questions

Are the two alcoves either side of a chimney the same size?

Almost never. In a Victorian or Edwardian house they routinely differ by 20 to 40mm, and the walls lean. That is precisely why alcove units are made individually rather than bought as a pair.

Cupboards below and shelves above?

It is the classic arrangement for a reason: closed storage where it is at eye level when you sit down, open display above. Typical split is cupboards to 900mm with four to five shelves over.

Can the shelves be adjustable?

Yes, on shelf pins into drilled rows, or on a routed housing if you want the look of fixed shelving. Adjustable is more practical; fixed housings look better and are stronger.

Can you get a TV and media kit into an alcove unit?

Yes, with a ventilated back panel and a brush plate for cables. Equipment needs air — a sealed cupboard full of amplifiers will overheat and shorten the kit's life.

Can you match existing joinery in the house?

Yes. We take a profile of the existing skirting, architrave or door and either match it from stock cutters or have a cutter ground so the new work runs identically. Matching an old paint colour is straightforward; matching aged oak takes a sample panel and a couple of attempts, which we build into the programme.
