Fitted storage

Under-Stairs Storage

Pull-out drawers and cupboards that use the awkward triangle under a flight.

The difference between a fitted job and a fitted-looking job is the setting out. For under-stairs storage in your home we rod the job first, so what arrives on site already accounts for the bows, the skirting and the ceiling line.

How we build it

Hardware is specified to the weight it is carrying, not to a price point. Soft-close runners are rated for the drawer load, hinges are adjustable in three planes, and sliding gear is sized so a full-height door still moves with one finger a decade later.

Finish and materials

Finishing happens in the workshop wherever possible. Sprayed paint gives an even film that brushwork cannot match, and the only work left on site is the final touch-in around scribes and fixings.

Guide prices are indicative. Real cost depends on the run length, ceiling height, finish and what goes inside. The indicative price tool gives you a range in about a minute, and a free survey turns it into a fixed written quote.

Straight answers

Under-Stairs Storage — common questions

What actually fits under a staircase?

More than you think. A typical straight flight gives you three usable zones: a full-height cupboard at the tall end, mid-height pull-outs in the middle, and shallow shoe or wine storage at the low end. Pull-outs are the key — a deep fixed cupboard means crawling in on your hands and knees.

Do you have to remove the existing cupboard door?

Usually yes. The standard builder's door under a stair wastes most of the volume behind it. Replacing it with a bank of pull-outs typically doubles what you can store and reach.

Is there a fire regulation issue?

There can be. If the stair is the only escape route in a house of three storeys or more, the understairs enclosure must be fire-resisting and cannot be used for certain storage. We check this at survey and specify accordingly.

Can the meter or consumer unit stay accessible?

It has to. We build a removable or hinged access panel so the meter reader and an electrician can get to it without dismantling the joinery.

Can a downstairs loo go under the stairs instead?

Frequently yes, if there is 1,900mm of headroom over the pan position and drainage is reachable. We build the enclosure, door and any vanity; the plumbing is a separate trade.

How heavy can a pull-out unit be?

The runners we use are rated to 70kg per pair loaded. A tall pull-out full of coats and boots will get close to that, so the carcass is built in 18mm ply rather than MDF.

Can it be made to disappear into the wall?

Yes — push-to-open fronts with no handles, painted the same colour as the wall and scribed to the skirting line. Done properly you have to look twice to see it is there.

Will it work on a winder or curved stair?

Yes, but it takes more setting out and each unit is a different shape. Expect the price per metre to be higher than a straight flight.
