Sliding Door Wardrobes

Full-height sliding doors where a hinged door has nowhere to swing.

Walls in your home are rarely square and floors are rarely level. A sliding-door wardrobe that is built in a workshop to a nominal size will show every millimetre of that. We survey first, scribe on site, and finish so the joint line disappears.

How we build it

Moisture matters more than most people expect. Timber is conditioned before machining, and anything going into a kitchen, utility or bathroom is specified in materials that will not swell at the bottom edge. That is why the base of a well-made unit still closes cleanly after five winters.

Finish and materials

You can have it primed for your own decorator, sprayed in any RAL or heritage colour, or left in oiled timber. Oiled finishes can be refreshed at home; sprayed finishes are harder wearing and are what we recommend for kitchens and anything at knee height.

Typical guide pricefrom £850 per linear metre, fitted
Typical lead time6–8 weeks from signed drawings
Typical constructionPly carcass, veneered doors

Guide prices are indicative. Real cost depends on the run length, ceiling height, finish and what goes inside. The indicative price tool gives you a range in about a minute, and a free survey turns it into a fixed written quote.

Straight answers

Sliding Door Wardrobes — common questions

How much space do sliding doors take up inside?

The top track and bottom guide take roughly 100mm off the internal depth. On a 650mm carcass that still leaves comfortable square hanging; on a 550mm carcass it does not, so we would recommend hinged doors instead.

Can sliding doors be full height?

Yes, up to about 2,800mm. Above around 2,400mm we move to a heavier gear set and a steel-reinforced stile, because a tall panel that flexes will jam in the track.

What can the door panels be made from?

Mirror, painted glass, veneered panel, painted MDF, or a framed combination of two or three. Mirror adds a lot of weight, so the gear is sized accordingly.

Do sliding doors seal against dust?

Not fully — there is always a running clearance. Brush seals on the stiles reduce it a great deal. If dust is a real concern, hinged doors on soft-close hinges are the better choice.

Can I have three doors instead of two?

Yes. Three doors on a two-track system means one bay is always covered. Three tracks gives you access to any two bays at once but pushes the carcass deeper.

Is the floor under the wardrobe carpeted?

We recommend fitting to the subfloor and carpeting up to the unit. Sliding gear needs a flat, firm bottom track, and carpet underneath will compress unevenly and throw the doors out.

How heavy can a sliding door be?

Standard domestic gear handles up to about 80kg per leaf. A full-height mirrored door can reach that on its own, which is why we specify the gear after the panel material is chosen, not before.

Can sliding wardrobes be removed later?

The doors and track come off easily. The carcass is fixed to the wall, so removing it will need making good behind. It is fitted furniture, designed to stay.
