Bristol is a county of dense Georgian and Victorian terraces on steep ground where every floor has a fall. That is exactly the kind of building stock a bookcase has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
Walls in Bristol are rarely square and floors are rarely level. A bookcase that is built in a workshop to a nominal size will show every millimetre of that. We survey first, scribe on site, and finish so the joint line disappears.
How we build it
Moisture matters more than most people expect. Timber is conditioned before machining, and anything going into a kitchen, utility or bathroom is specified in materials that will not swell at the bottom edge. That is why the base of a well-made unit still closes cleanly after five winters.
Finish and materials
Finishing happens in the workshop wherever possible. Sprayed paint gives an even film that brushwork cannot match, and the only work left on site is the final touch-in around scribes and fixings.

How deep should book shelving be?
250mm suits most hardbacks and paperbacks. 300mm takes art and reference books. Going deeper than 320mm just invites a second row behind the first, which you will never see again.
Can a bookcase go around a doorway?
Yes, and a bridging section over the door is one of the best uses of dead wall. The bridge is built as a separate deep box so it carries its own load rather than hanging off the uprights.
Can you add a ladder?
For a run over about 2,400mm high, yes. A rolling library ladder on a brass rail needs a solid fixing into the structure above the top shelf, which we plan at survey.
Can lighting be built in?
Yes — LED strip recessed into the front edge of each shelf, wired back to a single driver and a dimmer. It needs a spur planning before we fit, so it is worth deciding early.
Do you charge for the survey and drawings?
The measured survey and the quotation are free. If you want fully detailed manufacturing drawings or a 3D visual before committing, that is chargeable and the fee comes off the job if you proceed.
