Essex is a county of timber-framed cottages inland and interwar and modern estates along the Thames corridor. That is exactly the kind of building stock a bookcase has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
We build bookcases & libraries as cabinetmakers rather than fitters: machined joints, real carcass construction, and a finish applied under workshop conditions before anything reaches your Essex address.
How we build it
Timber is chosen for the room it is going into. Painted work is built in tulipwood and moisture-resistant MDF because they hold a crisp arris and take a sprayed finish without grain rise. Where the grain is meant to be seen we use European oak, walnut or ash, with veneers laid so the figure runs continuously across a set of doors.
Finish and materials
You can have it primed for your own decorator, sprayed in any RAL or heritage colour, or left in oiled timber. Oiled finishes can be refreshed at home; sprayed finishes are harder wearing and are what we recommend for kitchens and anything at knee height.

Can a bookcase go around a doorway?
Yes, and a bridging section over the door is one of the best uses of dead wall. The bridge is built as a separate deep box so it carries its own load rather than hanging off the uprights.
Can you add a ladder?
For a run over about 2,400mm high, yes. A rolling library ladder on a brass rail needs a solid fixing into the structure above the top shelf, which we plan at survey.
Can lighting be built in?
Yes — LED strip recessed into the front edge of each shelf, wired back to a single driver and a dimmer. It needs a spur planning before we fit, so it is worth deciding early.
How deep should book shelving be?
250mm suits most hardbacks and paperbacks. 300mm takes art and reference books. Going deeper than 320mm just invites a second row behind the first, which you will never see again.
What guarantee do you give?
Ten years on workmanship. Hardware carries the manufacturer's warranty, which on good runners and hinges is usually lifetime. Finishes are guaranteed for five years against flaking or delamination in normal domestic use.
