North Yorkshire is a county of limestone and sandstone cottages, Georgian York townhouses and rural farmhouses. That is exactly the kind of building stock a bookcase has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
Walls in North Yorkshire are rarely square and floors are rarely level. A bookcase that is built in a workshop to a nominal size will show every millimetre of that. We survey first, scribe on site, and finish so the joint line disappears.
How we build it
Timber is chosen for the room it is going into. Painted work is built in tulipwood and moisture-resistant MDF because they hold a crisp arris and take a sprayed finish without grain rise. Where the grain is meant to be seen we use European oak, walnut or ash, with veneers laid so the figure runs continuously across a set of doors.
Finish and materials
Finishing happens in the workshop wherever possible. Sprayed paint gives an even film that brushwork cannot match, and the only work left on site is the final touch-in around scribes and fixings.

Can lighting be built in?
Yes — LED strip recessed into the front edge of each shelf, wired back to a single driver and a dimmer. It needs a spur planning before we fit, so it is worth deciding early.
How deep should book shelving be?
250mm suits most hardbacks and paperbacks. 300mm takes art and reference books. Going deeper than 320mm just invites a second row behind the first, which you will never see again.
Can a bookcase go around a doorway?
Yes, and a bridging section over the door is one of the best uses of dead wall. The bridge is built as a separate deep box so it carries its own load rather than hanging off the uprights.
Can you add a ladder?
For a run over about 2,400mm high, yes. A rolling library ladder on a brass rail needs a solid fixing into the structure above the top shelf, which we plan at survey.
Do I need to empty the room before you fit?
Clear the working wall and anything fragile. We bring dust sheets and a vacuum-extracted saw, but fitting makes dust and we would rather your furniture was out of the way. For kitchens we will agree a sequence with you so you keep a sink and a kettle for as long as possible.
