Console Brackets & Corbels in Cardiff

Carved and scrolled brackets at the head of each pilaster.

Cardiff is a county of Victorian bay-fronted terraces on a grid, with steady period refurbishment. That is exactly the kind of building stock a set of console brackets has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.

How we approach it

Off-the-shelf units are made to standard sizes and then filled out with scribe strips. Our set of console brackets work is cut to the dimensions taken from your Cardiff property, so there is no packing, no filler and no gap that opens up in year two.

How we build it

Timber is chosen for the room it is going into. Painted work is built in tulipwood and moisture-resistant MDF because they hold a crisp arris and take a sprayed finish without grain rise. Where the grain is meant to be seen we use European oak, walnut or ash, with veneers laid so the figure runs continuously across a set of doors.

Finish and materials

You can have it primed for your own decorator, sprayed in any RAL or heritage colour, or left in oiled timber. Oiled finishes can be refreshed at home; sprayed finishes are harder wearing and are what we recommend for kitchens and anything at knee height.

Straight answers

Console Brackets & Corbels in Cardiff — common questions

Are they carved or moulded?

Both exist. A simple scroll is worked from solid on the spindle moulder; a period console with acanthus detail is hand-carved. We quote whichever the elevation actually needs.

What timber are they made from?

Solid hardwood, usually iroko or sapele for exterior work. Laminated stock is used where the scroll is deeper than available thickness, with joints placed to be invisible in the finished profile.

How are they fixed?

Screwed and plugged from behind into the pilaster head, never face-fixed. Face fixings show up through paint within a couple of years.

Can they be fitted to a modern frontage?

They can, but out of context they look applied rather than structural. On a plain modern elevation a clean pilaster head usually reads better.

Is bespoke joinery more expensive than a fitted furniture chain?

On a like-for-like specification it is usually comparable, and often less. Chains price a standard carcass and then charge for every deviation. A bespoke maker prices the actual room once. Where bespoke does cost more is in the materials — solid hardwood and sprayed finishes cost more than foil-wrapped board, and they last a great deal longer.
