Console Brackets & Corbels in Essex

Carved and scrolled brackets at the head of each pilaster.

Essex is a county of timber-framed cottages inland and interwar and modern estates along the Thames corridor. That is exactly the kind of building stock a set of console brackets has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.

How we approach it

A set of console brackets is a permanent part of the building, so it is worth setting out properly. We take the survey, agree the drawings, machine the parts in the workshop and fit in Essex in one visit wherever the programme allows.

How we build it

Carcass work is birch ply or MR MDF depending on span and load. Face frames and doors are solid hardwood. Everything is machined on the same setting so stiles, rails and reveals line through, and shadow gaps stay parallel from one end of the run to the other.

Finish and materials

You can have it primed for your own decorator, sprayed in any RAL or heritage colour, or left in oiled timber. Oiled finishes can be refreshed at home; sprayed finishes are harder wearing and are what we recommend for kitchens and anything at knee height.

Straight answers

Console Brackets & Corbels in Essex — common questions

Do they serve any function?

They mask the joint between the pilaster and the fascia and throw a little water clear of it. Mostly, though, they exist because the eye expects the vertical to terminate in something.

What is a console bracket?

The scrolled bracket at the top of each pilaster where it meets the fascia. Structurally it is trim; visually it is the detail that separates a considered frontage from a flat one.

Can you copy an existing bracket?

Yes. If one survives we take it off, template it and reproduce the pair. If none survives we work from photographs of the terrace and match the local pattern.

Do they need separate consent?

Not usually on their own, but on a listed building they form part of the approved elevation, so the profile matters to the officer.

What guarantee do you give?

Ten years on workmanship. Hardware carries the manufacturer's warranty, which on good runners and hinges is usually lifetime. Finishes are guaranteed for five years against flaking or delamination in normal domestic use.
