Fitted Wardrobes in Devon

Floor-to-ceiling wardrobes built to your wall, not to a flat-pack size.

Devon is a county of cob and stone cottages, Georgian terraces in the cities and steep coastal conversions. That is exactly the kind of building stock a fitted wardrobe has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.

How we approach it

Off-the-shelf units are made to standard sizes and then filled out with scribe strips. Our fitted wardrobe work is cut to the dimensions taken from your Devon property, so there is no packing, no filler and no gap that opens up in year two.

How we build it

Moisture matters more than most people expect. Timber is conditioned before machining, and anything going into a kitchen, utility or bathroom is specified in materials that will not swell at the bottom edge. That is why the base of a well-made unit still closes cleanly after five winters.

Finish and materials

Every finished job gets a short handover: what the surface is, how to clean it, and how to adjust a hinge if a door drops after the heating has been on for a season. Adjustment is normal in timber and takes about two minutes once you know which screw to turn.

Straight answers

Fitted Wardrobes in Devon — common questions

Will the wardrobes be attached to the wall?

Yes, they are fixed back to the structure for safety and to hold the carcasses straight. That means they are fitted furniture rather than freestanding, and they stay with the house if you move.

What is inside the wardrobe by default?

A standard bay is a hanging rail and a shelf above. From there you can add drawer banks, shoe racks, pull-out trouser rails, jewellery trays and internal LED lighting. The internal layout is priced separately so you can see what each addition costs.

How deep should a wardrobe be?

600mm external is the standard, which gives about 560mm inside — enough to hang a jacket square to the wall. Anything under 550mm and clothes have to hang sideways on a pull-out rail, which holds far less.

Can wardrobes go right up to a sloping ceiling?

Yes, and that is usually the best use of a loft or dormer room. The top section is cut to the rake and either fitted as a fixed panel or as a lift-up flap for luggage. It is more work than a square top, so expect it to add to the price.

Can you match existing joinery in the house?

Yes. We take a profile of the existing skirting, architrave or door and either match it from stock cutters or have a cutter ground so the new work runs identically. Matching an old paint colour is straightforward; matching aged oak takes a sample panel and a couple of attempts, which we build into the programme.
