Isle of Man is a county of rendered stone cottages, Victorian promenade terraces and rural farm properties. That is exactly the kind of building stock a hardwood door has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
Off-the-shelf units are made to standard sizes and then filled out with scribe strips. Our hardwood door work is cut to the dimensions taken from your Isle of Man property, so there is no packing, no filler and no gap that opens up in year two.
How we build it
Moisture matters more than most people expect. Timber is conditioned before machining, and anything going into a kitchen, utility or bathroom is specified in materials that will not swell at the bottom edge. That is why the base of a well-made unit still closes cleanly after five winters.
Finish and materials
Finishing happens in the workshop wherever possible. Sprayed paint gives an even film that brushwork cannot match, and the only work left on site is the final touch-in around scribes and fixings.

Solid or engineered core?
Engineered core with hardwood faces for most doors, because a solid slab of hardwood in a heated house will move and eventually bind or twist. Solid is right for smaller doors and where the spec demands it.
Do you supply the frame too?
Yes, and we would rather. A good door hung in a twisted frame will never close properly, and door and frame made together means the rebate and the weatherseal actually line up.
What about security?
Multipoint locking, laminated glazing where there is glass, and hinge bolts. Part Q applies to new dwellings and sets a tested standard for the doorset as a whole, not just the lock.
How much do they move seasonally?
An engineered core moves very little. We still set clearances for a wet winter rather than a dry summer, because a door that fits perfectly in August and jams in January was set up in the wrong season.
Do I need to empty the room before you fit?
Clear the working wall and anything fragile. We bring dust sheets and a vacuum-extracted saw, but fitting makes dust and we would rather your furniture was out of the way. For kitchens we will agree a sequence with you so you keep a sink and a kettle for as long as possible.
