Derbyshire is a county of gritstone cottages in the Peak, Victorian mill housing and large modern estates. That is exactly the kind of building stock a hardwood floor has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
Off-the-shelf units are made to standard sizes and then filled out with scribe strips. Our hardwood floor work is cut to the dimensions taken from your Derbyshire property, so there is no packing, no filler and no gap that opens up in year two.
How we build it
Moisture matters more than most people expect. Timber is conditioned before machining, and anything going into a kitchen, utility or bathroom is specified in materials that will not swell at the bottom edge. That is why the base of a well-made unit still closes cleanly after five winters.
Finish and materials
You can have it primed for your own decorator, sprayed in any RAL or heritage colour, or left in oiled timber. Oiled finishes can be refreshed at home; sprayed finishes are harder wearing and are what we recommend for kitchens and anything at knee height.

Can it be sanded later?
Solid can be sanded several times. Engineered depends on the wear layer — a 4mm or 6mm layer can take two or three sandings, a 2mm layer realistically one.
Can you match existing boards?
We can match species, width and finish closely. Exact colour is harder, because an existing floor has aged. Feathering the new into the old across a threshold usually reads better than a hard junction.
Can it go over underfloor heating?
Engineered, yes, with a maximum surface temperature and a slow commissioning cycle. Solid boards over underfloor heating will gap in winter, however carefully they are laid.
Does it need acclimatising?
Yes, in the room it is going into, at the humidity it will live at. Boards laid straight off a cold van will move once the heating goes on.
Do you work with architects and builders?
Regularly. We can work to your drawings and specification, price from a schedule, and co-ordinate with the main contractor's programme. We are equally happy dealing directly with a homeowner from a rough sketch.
