Hardwood Flooring in Gwynedd

Engineered and solid boards, laid and finished to suit the subfloor.

Gwynedd is a county of slate-roofed stone cottages in quarrying villages and coastal holiday properties. That is exactly the kind of building stock a hardwood floor has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.

How we approach it

The difference between a fitted job and a fitted-looking job is the setting out. For hardwood flooring in Gwynedd we rod the job first, so what arrives on site already accounts for the bows, the skirting and the ceiling line.

How we build it

Timber is chosen for the room it is going into. Painted work is built in tulipwood and moisture-resistant MDF because they hold a crisp arris and take a sprayed finish without grain rise. Where the grain is meant to be seen we use European oak, walnut or ash, with veneers laid so the figure runs continuously across a set of doors.

Finish and materials

You can have it primed for your own decorator, sprayed in any RAL or heritage colour, or left in oiled timber. Oiled finishes can be refreshed at home; sprayed finishes are harder wearing and are what we recommend for kitchens and anything at knee height.

Straight answers

Hardwood Flooring in Gwynedd — common questions

Can it be sanded later?

Solid can be sanded several times. Engineered depends on the wear layer — a 4mm or 6mm layer can take two or three sandings, a 2mm layer realistically one.

Can you match existing boards?

We can match species, width and finish closely. Exact colour is harder, because an existing floor has aged. Feathering the new into the old across a threshold usually reads better than a hard junction.

Can it go over underfloor heating?

Engineered, yes, with a maximum surface temperature and a slow commissioning cycle. Solid boards over underfloor heating will gap in winter, however carefully they are laid.

Does it need acclimatising?

Yes, in the room it is going into, at the humidity it will live at. Boards laid straight off a cold van will move once the heating goes on.

How long does a bespoke job take from order to fitting?

Most fitted furniture runs four to eight weeks from approved drawings to fitting day. Kitchens, staircases and timber windows are longer at eight to fourteen weeks because the components are larger and the finishing schedule is longer. We give you a date band at quotation and confirm the fitting week once the drawings are signed off.
