Hardwood Flooring in Powys

Engineered and solid boards, laid and finished to suit the subfloor.

Powys is a county of stone and timber-framed farmhouses across a very dispersed rural area. That is exactly the kind of building stock a hardwood floor has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.

How we approach it

Off-the-shelf units are made to standard sizes and then filled out with scribe strips. Our hardwood floor work is cut to the dimensions taken from your Powys property, so there is no packing, no filler and no gap that opens up in year two.

How we build it

Hardware is specified to the weight it is carrying, not to a price point. Soft-close runners are rated for the drawer load, hinges are adjustable in three planes, and sliding gear is sized so a full-height door still moves with one finger a decade later.

Finish and materials

You can have it primed for your own decorator, sprayed in any RAL or heritage colour, or left in oiled timber. Oiled finishes can be refreshed at home; sprayed finishes are harder wearing and are what we recommend for kitchens and anything at knee height.

Straight answers

Hardwood Flooring in Powys — common questions

What about expansion gaps?

Essential, around the whole perimeter and at thresholds, hidden under the skirting or a bead. A floor laid tight to the wall will buckle in the first humid spell.

Engineered or solid?

Engineered for most situations — it is far more stable across seasons and is the only sensible option over underfloor heating. Solid is fine over a stable timber subfloor in a room without heating below.

How wide should the boards be?

Wider boards suit larger rooms and read more generously; narrow boards suit smaller spaces and are more stable. Over about 220mm wide, engineered construction really matters.

What finish?

Hardwax oil for repairability, lacquer for maximum wear resistance in a hallway. Oil can be patched; lacquer has to be sanded back as a whole floor when it wears through.

Do you work with architects and builders?

Regularly. We can work to your drawings and specification, price from a schedule, and co-ordinate with the main contractor's programme. We are equally happy dealing directly with a homeowner from a rough sketch.
