Hardwood Gates in Essex

Driveway and side gates braced to stay square through a wet winter.

Essex is a county of timber-framed cottages inland and interwar and modern estates along the Thames corridor. That is exactly the kind of building stock a pair of hardwood gates has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.

How we approach it

A pair of hardwood gates is a permanent part of the building, so it is worth setting out properly. We take the survey, agree the drawings, machine the parts in the workshop and fit in Essex in one visit wherever the programme allows.

How we build it

Moisture matters more than most people expect. Timber is conditioned before machining, and anything going into a kitchen, utility or bathroom is specified in materials that will not swell at the bottom edge. That is why the base of a well-made unit still closes cleanly after five winters.

Finish and materials

Finishing happens in the workshop wherever possible. Sprayed paint gives an even film that brushwork cannot match, and the only work left on site is the final touch-in around scribes and fixings.

Straight answers

Hardwood Gates in Essex — common questions

What about a gap at the bottom?

Deliberate, and important. A gate closing tight to the ground wicks moisture into the bottom rail and will rot from there upward within a few years.

Which timber for gates?

Iroko or oak. Both are naturally durable enough for exterior use without pressure treatment. Iroko is more stable and less prone to staining around fixings.

Can gates be automated?

Yes, but the frame has to be built for it from the start — automation puts continuous load on the hinge stile. Retrofitting a motor to a gate not designed for it usually ends badly.

Do they need finishing?

Oil or leave to silver. Paint on an exterior gate needs more maintenance than most people expect, because the bottom rail is constantly wet.

What guarantee do you give?

Ten years on workmanship. Hardware carries the manufacturer's warranty, which on good runners and hinges is usually lifetime. Finishes are guaranteed for five years against flaking or delamination in normal domestic use.
