Hardwood Gates in Lanarkshire

Driveway and side gates braced to stay square through a wet winter.

Lanarkshire is a county of sandstone and brick terraces, former mining stock and large new estates. That is exactly the kind of building stock a pair of hardwood gates has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.

How we approach it

Every pair of hardwood gates we make starts with a site survey and a set of setting-out drawings, not a catalogue page. We measure the opening in Lanarkshire, check the walls for wind and the floor for fall, then cut a carcass that fits the room you actually have.

How we build it

Carcass work is birch ply or MR MDF depending on span and load. Face frames and doors are solid hardwood. Everything is machined on the same setting so stiles, rails and reveals line through, and shadow gaps stay parallel from one end of the run to the other.

Finish and materials

You can have it primed for your own decorator, sprayed in any RAL or heritage colour, or left in oiled timber. Oiled finishes can be refreshed at home; sprayed finishes are harder wearing and are what we recommend for kitchens and anything at knee height.

Straight answers

Hardwood Gates in Lanarkshire — common questions

What stops a wooden gate dropping?

Bracing that runs from the bottom hinge upward, so the diagonal works in compression. Run it the other way and it works in tension, the joints open and the gate sags. This is the single most common fault we are called out to.

What ironmongery do you use?

Stainless or galvanised throughout, and sized generously. Gate hardware fails long before the timber does, and undersized hinges on a heavy hardwood gate will tear out.

How wide can a single leaf be?

Around 1.2 metres before the leverage starts working against you. Beyond that a pair is better than one very wide leaf, both for the hardware and for the swing space.

Will they match my fencing?

We can match the boarding pattern and spacing so the gate reads as part of the run rather than as an insert. Same species matters too, since different hardwoods silver to different greys.

Do you charge for the survey and drawings?

The measured survey and the quotation are free. If you want fully detailed manufacturing drawings or a 3D visual before committing, that is chargeable and the fee comes off the job if you proceed.
