Oxfordshire is a county of Cotswold stone cottages, Oxford's Victorian villas and large new settlements. That is exactly the kind of building stock a pair of hardwood gates has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
Off-the-shelf units are made to standard sizes and then filled out with scribe strips. Our pair of hardwood gates work is cut to the dimensions taken from your Oxfordshire property, so there is no packing, no filler and no gap that opens up in year two.
How we build it
Hardware is specified to the weight it is carrying, not to a price point. Soft-close runners are rated for the drawer load, hinges are adjustable in three planes, and sliding gear is sized so a full-height door still moves with one finger a decade later.
Finish and materials
Every finished job gets a short handover: what the surface is, how to clean it, and how to adjust a hinge if a door drops after the heating has been on for a season. Adjustment is normal in timber and takes about two minutes once you know which screw to turn.

Straight answers
Hardwood Gates in Oxfordshire — common questions
Which timber for gates?
Iroko or oak. Both are naturally durable enough for exterior use without pressure treatment. Iroko is more stable and less prone to staining around fixings.
Can gates be automated?
Yes, but the frame has to be built for it from the start — automation puts continuous load on the hinge stile. Retrofitting a motor to a gate not designed for it usually ends badly.
Do they need finishing?
Oil or leave to silver. Paint on an exterior gate needs more maintenance than most people expect, because the bottom rail is constantly wet.
What about a gap at the bottom?
Deliberate, and important. A gate closing tight to the ground wicks moisture into the bottom rail and will rot from there upward within a few years.
Do you charge for the survey and drawings?
The measured survey and the quotation are free. If you want fully detailed manufacturing drawings or a 3D visual before committing, that is chargeable and the fee comes off the job if you proceed.
