Pembrokeshire is a county of rendered stone cottages, coastal second homes and exposed weather conditions. That is exactly the kind of building stock a pair of hardwood gates has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
The difference between a fitted job and a fitted-looking job is the setting out. For hardwood gates in Pembrokeshire we rod the job first, so what arrives on site already accounts for the bows, the skirting and the ceiling line.
How we build it
Timber is chosen for the room it is going into. Painted work is built in tulipwood and moisture-resistant MDF because they hold a crisp arris and take a sprayed finish without grain rise. Where the grain is meant to be seen we use European oak, walnut or ash, with veneers laid so the figure runs continuously across a set of doors.
Finish and materials
Finishing happens in the workshop wherever possible. Sprayed paint gives an even film that brushwork cannot match, and the only work left on site is the final touch-in around scribes and fixings.

Straight answers
Hardwood Gates in Pembrokeshire — common questions
Which timber for gates?
Iroko or oak. Both are naturally durable enough for exterior use without pressure treatment. Iroko is more stable and less prone to staining around fixings.
Can gates be automated?
Yes, but the frame has to be built for it from the start — automation puts continuous load on the hinge stile. Retrofitting a motor to a gate not designed for it usually ends badly.
Do they need finishing?
Oil or leave to silver. Paint on an exterior gate needs more maintenance than most people expect, because the bottom rail is constantly wet.
What about a gap at the bottom?
Deliberate, and important. A gate closing tight to the ground wicks moisture into the bottom rail and will rot from there upward within a few years.
How long does a bespoke job take from order to fitting?
Most fitted furniture runs four to eight weeks from approved drawings to fitting day. Kitchens, staircases and timber windows are longer at eight to fourteen weeks because the components are larger and the finishing schedule is longer. We give you a date band at quotation and confirm the fitting week once the drawings are signed off.
