Cardiff is a county of Victorian bay-fronted terraces on a grid, with steady period refurbishment. That is exactly the kind of building stock a hardwood shopfront has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
We build hardwood shopfronts as cabinetmakers rather than fitters: machined joints, real carcass construction, and a finish applied under workshop conditions before anything reaches your Cardiff address.
How we build it
Moisture matters more than most people expect. Timber is conditioned before machining, and anything going into a kitchen, utility or bathroom is specified in materials that will not swell at the bottom edge. That is why the base of a well-made unit still closes cleanly after five winters.
Finish and materials
Every finished job gets a short handover: what the surface is, how to clean it, and how to adjust a hinge if a door drops after the heating has been on for a season. Adjustment is normal in timber and takes about two minutes once you know which screw to turn.

Straight answers
Hardwood Shopfronts in Cardiff — common questions
Do you handle the glazing and signwriting?
We build and fit the joinery and coordinate the glazier. Signwriting is a separate trade, but we size the fascia and set the blocking to carry it, which is the part that goes wrong when a fascia is built too shallow.
Do I need consent to replace a timber shopfront?
If the building is listed or in a conservation area, yes — listed building consent or planning permission is usually required, and the officer will want to see a drawn elevation with mouldings and section sizes. We produce those drawings as part of the survey so you are not submitting a photograph and hoping.
How long does a shopfront take?
Eight to twelve weeks from signed drawings, most of which is machining and finishing rather than fitting. The fit itself is typically two to four days. Trading can usually continue, though the glazing day needs the frontage clear.
Is a timber shopfront secure enough?
Security comes from the glazing spec and the closing hardware, not the timber. We build for laminated glass, concealed shootbolts and a proper mortice, and we can detail for a shutter box behind the fascia so the shutter does not spoil the elevation.
Do you work with architects and builders?
Regularly. We can work to your drawings and specification, price from a schedule, and co-ordinate with the main contractor's programme. We are equally happy dealing directly with a homeowner from a rough sketch.
