South Yorkshire is a county of stone and brick terraced housing, colliery-village stock and large modern estates. That is exactly the kind of building stock a hardwood staircase has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
Off-the-shelf units are made to standard sizes and then filled out with scribe strips. Our hardwood staircase work is cut to the dimensions taken from your South Yorkshire property, so there is no packing, no filler and no gap that opens up in year two.
How we build it
Timber is chosen for the room it is going into. Painted work is built in tulipwood and moisture-resistant MDF because they hold a crisp arris and take a sprayed finish without grain rise. Where the grain is meant to be seen we use European oak, walnut or ash, with veneers laid so the figure runs continuously across a set of doors.
Finish and materials
Every finished job gets a short handover: what the surface is, how to clean it, and how to adjust a hinge if a door drops after the heating has been on for a season. Adjustment is normal in timber and takes about two minutes once you know which screw to turn.

Straight answers
Hardwood Staircases in South Yorkshire — common questions
Can I have hardwood treads with painted risers?
Yes, and it is the most requested combination. It gives the warmth of the timber on the wear surface and keeps the stair looking lighter than an all-hardwood flight.
How is a hardwood stair finished?
Hardwax oil on treads and handrail — it wears into the timber rather than sitting on top, so it can be patched locally instead of stripped and redone. Lacquer looks good initially but chips visibly at the nosing.
Can you make a curved or cut-string stair?
Yes. Cut string with mitred risers is the traditional detail and shows the tread profile from the side. Curved strings are laminated to a former taken off the site survey.
Which hardwood is best for stairs?
Oak for most jobs — hard enough to wear well and it takes an oil finish beautifully. Ash where you want something lighter and it steam-bends well for curved handrails. Walnut for a darker, more expensive feel, usually on treads with a painted string.
Do you work with architects and builders?
Regularly. We can work to your drawings and specification, price from a schedule, and co-ordinate with the main contractor's programme. We are equally happy dealing directly with a homeowner from a rough sketch.
