Derbyshire is a county of gritstone cottages in the Peak, Victorian mill housing and large modern estates. That is exactly the kind of building stock a hardwood window has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
We build hardwood windows as cabinetmakers rather than fitters: machined joints, real carcass construction, and a finish applied under workshop conditions before anything reaches your Derbyshire address.
How we build it
Carcass work is birch ply or MR MDF depending on span and load. Face frames and doors are solid hardwood. Everything is machined on the same setting so stiles, rails and reveals line through, and shadow gaps stay parallel from one end of the run to the other.
Finish and materials
Finishing happens in the workshop wherever possible. Sprayed paint gives an even film that brushwork cannot match, and the only work left on site is the final touch-in around scribes and fixings.

Straight answers
Hardwood Windows in Derbyshire — common questions
Are they draughty like old timber windows?
No. Modern hardwood windows carry brush and compression seals in the rebate. The draughts people associate with timber come from hundred-year-old joints, not from the material.
Which species do you use?
Accoya for painted work — it barely moves, so paint lasts. Sapele and utile for stained finishes. European oak where the building demands it, detailed with stainless fixings because oak tannin corrodes ordinary steel and stains the timber black.
Do they need painting often?
Factory-finished accoya typically goes eight to ten years before a maintenance coat. Softwood on the same elevation would want attention in three to five.
What about conservation areas?
Timber windows are usually what the officer wants, but the detail matters — the profile, the bar width, whether the glass is putty-line or bead. We drive the drawings from that.
What guarantee do you give?
Ten years on workmanship. Hardware carries the manufacturer's warranty, which on good runners and hinges is usually lifetime. Finishes are guaranteed for five years against flaking or delamination in normal domestic use.
