Northamptonshire is a county of ironstone villages, Victorian boot-and-shoe terraces and large new settlements. That is exactly the kind of building stock a hardwood window has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
Walls in Northamptonshire are rarely square and floors are rarely level. A hardwood window that is built in a workshop to a nominal size will show every millimetre of that. We survey first, scribe on site, and finish so the joint line disappears.
How we build it
Moisture matters more than most people expect. Timber is conditioned before machining, and anything going into a kitchen, utility or bathroom is specified in materials that will not swell at the bottom edge. That is why the base of a well-made unit still closes cleanly after five winters.
Finish and materials
Every finished job gets a short handover: what the surface is, how to clean it, and how to adjust a hinge if a door drops after the heating has been on for a season. Adjustment is normal in timber and takes about two minutes once you know which screw to turn.

Straight answers
Hardwood Windows in Northamptonshire — common questions
Which species do you use?
Accoya for painted work — it barely moves, so paint lasts. Sapele and utile for stained finishes. European oak where the building demands it, detailed with stainless fixings because oak tannin corrodes ordinary steel and stains the timber black.
Do they need painting often?
Factory-finished accoya typically goes eight to ten years before a maintenance coat. Softwood on the same elevation would want attention in three to five.
What about conservation areas?
Timber windows are usually what the officer wants, but the detail matters — the profile, the bar width, whether the glass is putty-line or bead. We drive the drawings from that.
Are they draughty like old timber windows?
No. Modern hardwood windows carry brush and compression seals in the rebate. The draughts people associate with timber come from hundred-year-old joints, not from the material.
Do you work with architects and builders?
Regularly. We can work to your drawings and specification, price from a schedule, and co-ordinate with the main contractor's programme. We are equally happy dealing directly with a homeowner from a rough sketch.
