Home Offices & Studies in Rutland

Desk, shelving and cable management built as one continuous run.

Rutland is a county of limestone and Collyweston-slate cottages in tightly conserved villages. That is exactly the kind of building stock a fitted home office has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.

How we approach it

Walls in Rutland are rarely square and floors are rarely level. A fitted home office that is built in a workshop to a nominal size will show every millimetre of that. We survey first, scribe on site, and finish so the joint line disappears.

How we build it

Carcass work is birch ply or MR MDF depending on span and load. Face frames and doors are solid hardwood. Everything is machined on the same setting so stiles, rails and reveals line through, and shadow gaps stay parallel from one end of the run to the other.

Finish and materials

You can have it primed for your own decorator, sprayed in any RAL or heritage colour, or left in oiled timber. Oiled finishes can be refreshed at home; sprayed finishes are harder wearing and are what we recommend for kitchens and anything at knee height.

Straight answers

Home Offices & Studies in Rutland — common questions

Can you build in a printer and filing?

Yes. A pull-out shelf for the printer at low level is much better than a fixed shelf — it lets you reach the back for paper jams. Filing is usually a two-drawer bank under the desk on full-extension runners.

Can an office fit into an alcove or a landing?

Frequently. A 1,200mm alcove takes a full workstation with shelving above, and a landing return can take a desk under a window. Both are much better than a table in a corner of a bedroom.

How deep should a built-in desk be?

700mm minimum for a monitor at a comfortable distance. 600mm works for a laptop only. Less than 600mm and you will end up sitting too close to the screen.

How do you manage the cables?

A cable tray under the full length of the desk, grommets at each workstation, and a single ventilated cupboard for the router, hub and power. Done once at build stage it stays tidy permanently.

Do I need to empty the room before you fit?

Clear the working wall and anything fragile. We bring dust sheets and a vacuum-extracted saw, but fitting makes dust and we would rather your furniture was out of the way. For kitchens we will agree a sequence with you so you keep a sink and a kettle for as long as possible.
