Kitchen Islands in Shropshire

A single piece of cabinetry that has to work from all four sides.

Shropshire is a county of timber-framed and brick town houses, stone cottages and scattered rural farmsteads. That is exactly the kind of building stock a kitchen island has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.

How we approach it

Walls in Shropshire are rarely square and floors are rarely level. A kitchen island that is built in a workshop to a nominal size will show every millimetre of that. We survey first, scribe on site, and finish so the joint line disappears.

How we build it

Moisture matters more than most people expect. Timber is conditioned before machining, and anything going into a kitchen, utility or bathroom is specified in materials that will not swell at the bottom edge. That is why the base of a well-made unit still closes cleanly after five winters.

Finish and materials

Every finished job gets a short handover: what the surface is, how to clean it, and how to adjust a hinge if a door drops after the heating has been on for a season. Adjustment is normal in timber and takes about two minutes once you know which screw to turn.

Straight answers

Kitchen Islands in Shropshire — common questions

Should the island match the rest of the kitchen?

It often works better in a contrasting colour or a natural timber, because it reads as a piece of furniture rather than a run of units. A different worktop on the island is a good move too.

Can we have sockets in the island?

Yes, and you will want them. Either a face-mounted socket in the end panel or a pop-up unit in the worktop. It needs a spur run before the floor closes up.

What worktop thickness looks right on an island?

20mm reads contemporary, 30mm reads substantial, and a mitred 60 to 100mm apron gives the slab look. The thicker the apron, the more the carcass underneath has to be set back and reinforced.

Can an island take a sink or a hob?

Yes, but both need services routed through the floor, which is straightforward on a suspended floor and a much bigger job on a slab. Extraction over an island hob is the other consideration — a downdraft or a ceiling unit rather than a standard hood.

Is bespoke joinery more expensive than a fitted furniture chain?

On a like-for-like specification it is usually comparable, and often less. Chains price a standard carcass and then charge for every deviation. A bespoke maker prices the actual room once. Where bespoke does cost more is in the materials — solid hardwood and sprayed finishes cost more than foil-wrapped board, and they last a great deal longer.
