Berkshire is a county of riverside Victorian villas and a large stock of 1980s onwards executive housing. That is exactly the kind of building stock a sash window restoration has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
We build sash window restoration as cabinetmakers rather than fitters: machined joints, real carcass construction, and a finish applied under workshop conditions before anything reaches your Berkshire address.
How we build it
Carcass work is birch ply or MR MDF depending on span and load. Face frames and doors are solid hardwood. Everything is machined on the same setting so stiles, rails and reveals line through, and shadow gaps stay parallel from one end of the run to the other.
Finish and materials
Every finished job gets a short handover: what the surface is, how to clean it, and how to adjust a hinge if a door drops after the heating has been on for a season. Adjustment is normal in timber and takes about two minutes once you know which screw to turn.

Straight answers
Sash Window Restoration in Berkshire — common questions
How do you deal with rot?
We cut the decayed timber out entirely and splice in new — usually Accoya — with a scarfed and glued joint. Filler over rot is a cosmetic fix that fails within two years; we do not do it.
What is involved in overhauling the mechanism?
Ease the sashes, renew the cords, check and rebalance the weights, replace worn pulleys, and refit the beads with new brush seals. Done properly the window runs with one finger and stays where you leave it.
Will draught-proofing alone make a difference?
A significant one. Most of the discomfort from an old sash is air movement, not glass conduction. A full brush-seal overhaul typically cuts the draught to near zero for a fraction of the cost of replacement.
Do you paint them afterwards?
We prepare, prime and can apply the full finish, or leave them primed for your decorator. Repaired areas need the same coating system as the rest for the finish to wear evenly.
How do I pay, and when?
A deposit at order to cover materials, a stage payment when the work leaves the workshop, and the balance on completion after you have inspected the fit. Everything is written into the quotation before you commit.
