Sash Window Restoration in Ceredigion

Splice out the rot, rebalance the weights, keep the original glass.

Ceredigion is a county of colour-washed coastal terraces and remote stone farmhouses. That is exactly the kind of building stock a sash window restoration has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.

How we approach it

Walls in Ceredigion are rarely square and floors are rarely level. A sash window restoration that is built in a workshop to a nominal size will show every millimetre of that. We survey first, scribe on site, and finish so the joint line disappears.

How we build it

Moisture matters more than most people expect. Timber is conditioned before machining, and anything going into a kitchen, utility or bathroom is specified in materials that will not swell at the bottom edge. That is why the base of a well-made unit still closes cleanly after five winters.

Finish and materials

You can have it primed for your own decorator, sprayed in any RAL or heritage colour, or left in oiled timber. Oiled finishes can be refreshed at home; sprayed finishes are harder wearing and are what we recommend for kitchens and anything at knee height.

Straight answers

Sash Window Restoration in Ceredigion — common questions

Can you save the original glass?

Yes, and it is worth saving. Old cylinder and crown glass has a movement and a slight distortion that no modern glass reproduces. We de-glaze carefully, keep it aside and re-putty on reassembly.

Can double glazing be retrofitted into original sashes?

Sometimes. The rebate has to be deep enough to take a slim unit, and the sash has to be strong enough for the extra weight. Where it is not viable, secondary glazing or a high-performance draught-proofing overhaul gets much of the benefit.

How long does restoration take per window?

One to two days per window on site for an overhaul. If sashes need to go back to the workshop for splicing, allow two to three weeks and we fit temporary boarding or a holding sash.

Is it worth restoring rather than replacing?

If the boxes and pulley stiles are sound, almost always. Restoration keeps the original glass and joinery, is cheaper, and in a conservation area or listed building it is frequently the only option that will be approved.

Do I need to empty the room before you fit?

Clear the working wall and anything fragile. We bring dust sheets and a vacuum-extracted saw, but fitting makes dust and we would rather your furniture was out of the way. For kitchens we will agree a sequence with you so you keep a sink and a kettle for as long as possible.
