Cumbria is a county of slate and rendered stone cottages with thick, irregular walls throughout the Lakes. That is exactly the kind of building stock a sash window has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
Walls in Cumbria are rarely square and floors are rarely level. A sash window that is built in a workshop to a nominal size will show every millimetre of that. We survey first, scribe on site, and finish so the joint line disappears.
How we build it
Carcass work is birch ply or MR MDF depending on span and load. Face frames and doors are solid hardwood. Everything is machined on the same setting so stiles, rails and reveals line through, and shadow gaps stay parallel from one end of the run to the other.
Finish and materials
You can have it primed for your own decorator, sprayed in any RAL or heritage colour, or left in oiled timber. Oiled finishes can be refreshed at home; sprayed finishes are harder wearing and are what we recommend for kitchens and anything at knee height.

Is it cheaper to repair the existing sashes?
Very often, yes — see our sash window restoration service. If the boxes are sound and only the sills and bottom rails have gone, repair is usually the better value and keeps the original glass.
Do I need planning permission or listed building consent?
In a conservation area, replacing windows usually needs permission and the replacement must match the original. In a listed building you will need listed building consent. We can supply drawings and a specification to support an application.
How draughty will they be?
A new sash with brush seals in the meeting rail, staff bead and parting bead is not draughty at all. The draught in an old sash comes from a worn rebate, not from the design.
Can you match the original glazing bars?
Yes. We match the bar width and profile from the original. With double glazing, a true divided bar with individual small units is the authentic route; a bonded bar with a spacer inside is far cheaper and reads correctly from the street.
Can you match existing joinery in the house?
Yes. We take a profile of the existing skirting, architrave or door and either match it from stock cutters or have a cutter ground so the new work runs identically. Matching an old paint colour is straightforward; matching aged oak takes a sample panel and a couple of attempts, which we build into the programme.
