Fife is a county of pantiled fishing-village cottages, Georgian townhouses and modern commuter estates. That is exactly the kind of building stock a staircase has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
Off-the-shelf units are made to standard sizes and then filled out with scribe strips. Our staircase work is cut to the dimensions taken from your Fife property, so there is no packing, no filler and no gap that opens up in year two.
How we build it
Timber is chosen for the room it is going into. Painted work is built in tulipwood and moisture-resistant MDF because they hold a crisp arris and take a sprayed finish without grain rise. Where the grain is meant to be seen we use European oak, walnut or ash, with veneers laid so the figure runs continuously across a set of doors.
Finish and materials
Finishing happens in the workshop wherever possible. Sprayed paint gives an even film that brushwork cannot match, and the only work left on site is the final touch-in around scribes and fixings.

Can I change a straight stair to a winder?
Often yes, and it is a good way to recover floor space. The tricky part is the headroom at the top of the winder and the trimming of the floor opening, which is structural work requiring a builder alongside us.
Can you replace just the balustrade?
Yes, and it is the single biggest visual change you can make for the money. New newel posts, handrail and spindles, or a glass or steel infill, onto the existing carriage.
What timber for a stair?
Oak for a natural finish — it is hard enough to take traffic. Tulipwood or engineered softwood for a painted stair. Treads take more wear than anything else in the house, so we do not use soft timber on a tread regardless of the finish.
How long is the house without a staircase?
For a straight replacement, one to two days with a temporary means of access. We sequence so upstairs is reachable at the end of each working day.
Do I need to empty the room before you fit?
Clear the working wall and anything fragile. We bring dust sheets and a vacuum-extracted saw, but fitting makes dust and we would rather your furniture was out of the way. For kitchens we will agree a sequence with you so you keep a sink and a kettle for as long as possible.
