Surrey is a county of 1930s semis, Arts and Crafts detached houses and a steady flow of new-build estates. That is exactly the kind of building stock a staircase has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
Walls in Surrey are rarely square and floors are rarely level. A staircase that is built in a workshop to a nominal size will show every millimetre of that. We survey first, scribe on site, and finish so the joint line disappears.
How we build it
Moisture matters more than most people expect. Timber is conditioned before machining, and anything going into a kitchen, utility or bathroom is specified in materials that will not swell at the bottom edge. That is why the base of a well-made unit still closes cleanly after five winters.
Finish and materials
Every finished job gets a short handover: what the surface is, how to clean it, and how to adjust a hinge if a door drops after the heating has been on for a season. Adjustment is normal in timber and takes about two minutes once you know which screw to turn.

What timber for a stair?
Oak for a natural finish — it is hard enough to take traffic. Tulipwood or engineered softwood for a painted stair. Treads take more wear than anything else in the house, so we do not use soft timber on a tread regardless of the finish.
How long is the house without a staircase?
For a straight replacement, one to two days with a temporary means of access. We sequence so upstairs is reachable at the end of each working day.
Can I change a straight stair to a winder?
Often yes, and it is a good way to recover floor space. The tricky part is the headroom at the top of the winder and the trimming of the floor opening, which is structural work requiring a builder alongside us.
Can you replace just the balustrade?
Yes, and it is the single biggest visual change you can make for the money. New newel posts, handrail and spindles, or a glass or steel infill, onto the existing carriage.
How do I pay, and when?
A deposit at order to cover materials, a stage payment when the work leaves the workshop, and the balance on completion after you have inspected the fit. Everything is written into the quotation before you commit.
