Hampshire is a county of Georgian naval-town housing, thatched village cottages and extensive modern estates. That is exactly the kind of building stock a run of timber cladding has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
Walls in Hampshire are rarely square and floors are rarely level. A run of timber cladding that is built in a workshop to a nominal size will show every millimetre of that. We survey first, scribe on site, and finish so the joint line disappears.
How we build it
Carcass work is birch ply or MR MDF depending on span and load. Face frames and doors are solid hardwood. Everything is machined on the same setting so stiles, rails and reveals line through, and shadow gaps stay parallel from one end of the run to the other.
Finish and materials
Finishing happens in the workshop wherever possible. Sprayed paint gives an even film that brushwork cannot match, and the only work left on site is the final touch-in around scribes and fixings.

Does cladding need a cavity behind it?
Yes. A ventilated and drained cavity on treated battens over a breather membrane is what keeps the boards dry from both sides. Cladding fixed straight to a wall will cup, and the wall behind will stay wet.
Will it all go grey?
If untreated, yes, and unevenly at first — the sheltered areas silver more slowly than the exposed ones. It evens out over two to three years. If you want it to stay honey-coloured, expect to recoat every two to three years.
Is timber cladding a fire risk?
On a domestic house below 11m, standard timber cladding is generally acceptable, subject to distance from the boundary. Above 11m or on flats, non-combustible materials are required. We check the position against current regulations before quoting.
How long will it last?
Larch and cedar in a well-detailed, ventilated rainscreen give thirty to fifty years. The failures we are called to are nearly always detailing — no cavity, wrong fixings, or boards taken to ground level with no clearance.
What guarantee do you give?
Ten years on workmanship. Hardware carries the manufacturer's warranty, which on good runners and hinges is usually lifetime. Finishes are guaranteed for five years against flaking or delamination in normal domestic use.
