West Sussex is a county of flint and tile-hung cottages inland with Regency and Victorian stock on the coast. That is exactly the kind of building stock a run of under-stair storage has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
A run of under-stair storage is a permanent part of the building, so it is worth setting out properly. We take the survey, agree the drawings, machine the parts in the workshop and fit in West Sussex in one visit wherever the programme allows.
How we build it
Carcass work is birch ply or MR MDF depending on span and load. Face frames and doors are solid hardwood. Everything is machined on the same setting so stiles, rails and reveals line through, and shadow gaps stay parallel from one end of the run to the other.
Finish and materials
Finishing happens in the workshop wherever possible. Sprayed paint gives an even film that brushwork cannot match, and the only work left on site is the final touch-in around scribes and fixings.

Straight answers
Under-Stairs Storage in West Sussex — common questions
Can a downstairs loo go under the stairs instead?
Frequently yes, if there is 1,900mm of headroom over the pan position and drainage is reachable. We build the enclosure, door and any vanity; the plumbing is a separate trade.
Can it be made to disappear into the wall?
Yes — push-to-open fronts with no handles, painted the same colour as the wall and scribed to the skirting line. Done properly you have to look twice to see it is there.
What actually fits under a staircase?
More than you think. A typical straight flight gives you three usable zones: a full-height cupboard at the tall end, mid-height pull-outs in the middle, and shallow shoe or wine storage at the low end. Pull-outs are the key — a deep fixed cupboard means crawling in on your hands and knees.
Is there a fire regulation issue?
There can be. If the stair is the only escape route in a house of three storeys or more, the understairs enclosure must be fire-resisting and cannot be used for certain storage. We check this at survey and specify accordingly.
How do I pay, and when?
A deposit at order to cover materials, a stage payment when the work leaves the workshop, and the balance on completion after you have inspected the fit. Everything is written into the quotation before you commit.
