Window Seats & Bay Seating in Cardiff

Storage seating scribed into a bay, with a lid that lifts and stays.

Cardiff is a county of Victorian bay-fronted terraces on a grid, with steady period refurbishment. That is exactly the kind of building stock a window seat has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.

How we approach it

A window seat is a permanent part of the building, so it is worth setting out properly. We take the survey, agree the drawings, machine the parts in the workshop and fit in Cardiff in one visit wherever the programme allows.

How we build it

Hardware is specified to the weight it is carrying, not to a price point. Soft-close runners are rated for the drawer load, hinges are adjustable in three planes, and sliding gear is sized so a full-height door still moves with one finger a decade later.

Finish and materials

You can have it primed for your own decorator, sprayed in any RAL or heritage colour, or left in oiled timber. Oiled finishes can be refreshed at home; sprayed finishes are harder wearing and are what we recommend for kitchens and anything at knee height.

Straight answers

Window Seats & Bay Seating in Cardiff — common questions

Can there be storage underneath?

Yes, and it is the main reason to build one. A lift-up lid on soft-close stays is the usual answer for bedding and toys; drawers underneath are better for things you reach for daily.

Can it follow a curved or angled bay?

Yes. A three-sided bay is built in three sections meeting at the mullion lines. A curved bay needs a laminated front rail, which adds cost.

Will the lid stay open on its own?

Yes, on gas stays or friction stays. It is worth specifying — a heavy lid that drops is a real hazard where children are involved.

How deep should a window seat be?

450mm for perching, 500mm to 550mm to sit properly with cushions. Deeper than 600mm and you cannot reach the window.

Can you match existing joinery in the house?

Yes. We take a profile of the existing skirting, architrave or door and either match it from stock cutters or have a cutter ground so the new work runs identically. Matching an old paint colour is straightforward; matching aged oak takes a sample panel and a couple of attempts, which we build into the programme.
