Window Seats & Bay Seating in Ceredigion

Storage seating scribed into a bay, with a lid that lifts and stays.

Ceredigion is a county of colour-washed coastal terraces and remote stone farmhouses. That is exactly the kind of building stock a window seat has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.

How we approach it

Walls in Ceredigion are rarely square and floors are rarely level. A window seat that is built in a workshop to a nominal size will show every millimetre of that. We survey first, scribe on site, and finish so the joint line disappears.

How we build it

Timber is chosen for the room it is going into. Painted work is built in tulipwood and moisture-resistant MDF because they hold a crisp arris and take a sprayed finish without grain rise. Where the grain is meant to be seen we use European oak, walnut or ash, with veneers laid so the figure runs continuously across a set of doors.

Finish and materials

Every finished job gets a short handover: what the surface is, how to clean it, and how to adjust a hinge if a door drops after the heating has been on for a season. Adjustment is normal in timber and takes about two minutes once you know which screw to turn.

Straight answers

Window Seats & Bay Seating in Ceredigion — common questions

How deep should a window seat be?

450mm for perching, 500mm to 550mm to sit properly with cushions. Deeper than 600mm and you cannot reach the window.

Can there be storage underneath?

Yes, and it is the main reason to build one. A lift-up lid on soft-close stays is the usual answer for bedding and toys; drawers underneath are better for things you reach for daily.

Can it follow a curved or angled bay?

Yes. A three-sided bay is built in three sections meeting at the mullion lines. A curved bay needs a laminated front rail, which adds cost.

Will the lid stay open on its own?

Yes, on gas stays or friction stays. It is worth specifying — a heavy lid that drops is a real hazard where children are involved.

Can you match existing joinery in the house?

Yes. We take a profile of the existing skirting, architrave or door and either match it from stock cutters or have a cutter ground so the new work runs identically. Matching an old paint colour is straightforward; matching aged oak takes a sample panel and a couple of attempts, which we build into the programme.
