Gwynedd is a county of slate-roofed stone cottages in quarrying villages and coastal holiday properties. That is exactly the kind of building stock a window seat has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
Walls in Gwynedd are rarely square and floors are rarely level. A window seat that is built in a workshop to a nominal size will show every millimetre of that. We survey first, scribe on site, and finish so the joint line disappears.
How we build it
Timber is chosen for the room it is going into. Painted work is built in tulipwood and moisture-resistant MDF because they hold a crisp arris and take a sprayed finish without grain rise. Where the grain is meant to be seen we use European oak, walnut or ash, with veneers laid so the figure runs continuously across a set of doors.
Finish and materials
Every finished job gets a short handover: what the surface is, how to clean it, and how to adjust a hinge if a door drops after the heating has been on for a season. Adjustment is normal in timber and takes about two minutes once you know which screw to turn.

Do you supply the cushions?
We supply the seat and can provide the template. Cushions are made by an upholsterer — we can recommend one, and a 75mm to 100mm foam with a fabric of your choosing is the usual specification.
Can a window seat be free-standing?
It can be built as a movable box, but scribed and fixed always looks better because the gaps to the reveal disappear.
What height should the seat be?
450mm to the top of the finished cushion, matching normal chair height. If the seat has to sit under a windowsill, the sill height dictates it — we will tell you at survey whether the result will be comfortable.
How do you deal with a radiator under the window?
Either relocate it, or build the seat over it with a ventilated grille front and a gap at the top. Boxing a radiator loses some output, so we size the grille to keep that to a minimum.
