Window Seats & Bay Seating in West Midlands

Storage seating scribed into a bay, with a lid that lifts and stays.

West Midlands is a county of Victorian back-to-back terraces, vast interwar semi estates and 1960s tower blocks. That is exactly the kind of building stock a window seat has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.

How we approach it

We build window seats & bay seating as cabinetmakers rather than fitters: machined joints, real carcass construction, and a finish applied under workshop conditions before anything reaches your West Midlands address.

How we build it

Moisture matters more than most people expect. Timber is conditioned before machining, and anything going into a kitchen, utility or bathroom is specified in materials that will not swell at the bottom edge. That is why the base of a well-made unit still closes cleanly after five winters.

Finish and materials

Finishing happens in the workshop wherever possible. Sprayed paint gives an even film that brushwork cannot match, and the only work left on site is the final touch-in around scribes and fixings.

Straight answers

Window Seats & Bay Seating in West Midlands — common questions

Will the lid stay open on its own?

Yes, on gas stays or friction stays. It is worth specifying — a heavy lid that drops is a real hazard where children are involved.

How deep should a window seat be?

450mm for perching, 500mm to 550mm to sit properly with cushions. Deeper than 600mm and you cannot reach the window.

Can there be storage underneath?

Yes, and it is the main reason to build one. A lift-up lid on soft-close stays is the usual answer for bedding and toys; drawers underneath are better for things you reach for daily.

Can it follow a curved or angled bay?

Yes. A three-sided bay is built in three sections meeting at the mullion lines. A curved bay needs a laminated front rail, which adds cost.

Can you match existing joinery in the house?

Yes. We take a profile of the existing skirting, architrave or door and either match it from stock cutters or have a cutter ground so the new work runs identically. Matching an old paint colour is straightforward; matching aged oak takes a sample panel and a couple of attempts, which we build into the programme.
