Bespoke Kitchens in County Down

Cabinetry made for your room, in the timber and finish you choose.

County Down is a county of rendered farmhouses, coastal villas and extensive modern development. That is exactly the kind of building stock a bespoke kitchen has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.

How we approach it

Walls in County Down are rarely square and floors are rarely level. A bespoke kitchen that is built in a workshop to a nominal size will show every millimetre of that. We survey first, scribe on site, and finish so the joint line disappears.

How we build it

Moisture matters more than most people expect. Timber is conditioned before machining, and anything going into a kitchen, utility or bathroom is specified in materials that will not swell at the bottom edge. That is why the base of a well-made unit still closes cleanly after five winters.

Finish and materials

You can have it primed for your own decorator, sprayed in any RAL or heritage colour, or left in oiled timber. Oiled finishes can be refreshed at home; sprayed finishes are harder wearing and are what we recommend for kitchens and anything at knee height.

Straight answers

Bespoke Kitchens in County Down — common questions

Which worktop material do you recommend?

Quartz for durability and no maintenance. Granite if you want natural stone that will take heat. Solid timber for warmth, accepting it needs oiling and will mark. We fit all three and template through a stone specialist.

What timber do you use for painted kitchens?

Tulipwood for the frames and doors, MR MDF for panels. Tulipwood machines to a very crisp edge and does not telegraph grain through paint the way oak does.

Is a bespoke kitchen worth it over a good German range?

A German range gives you excellent engineering in standard modules. Bespoke gives you a kitchen with no filler panels, in the exact colour, using the full height and the awkward corners. In a period house with uneven walls, bespoke is usually the better value; in a square new-build, less so.

What is the difference between in-frame and frameless?

In-frame doors sit inside a solid timber face frame, which is the traditional cabinetmaker's method — it looks better, is more forgiving in an old house, and costs more. Frameless (or full overlay) doors sit over the carcass edge and give a cleaner, more contemporary line for less.

Is bespoke joinery more expensive than a fitted furniture chain?

On a like-for-like specification it is usually comparable, and often less. Chains price a standard carcass and then charge for every deviation. A bespoke maker prices the actual room once. Where bespoke does cost more is in the materials — solid hardwood and sprayed finishes cost more than foil-wrapped board, and they last a great deal longer.
