Cumbria is a county of slate and rendered stone cottages with thick, irregular walls throughout the Lakes. That is exactly the kind of building stock a bespoke kitchen has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
Walls in Cumbria are rarely square and floors are rarely level. A bespoke kitchen that is built in a workshop to a nominal size will show every millimetre of that. We survey first, scribe on site, and finish so the joint line disappears.
How we build it
Carcass work is birch ply or MR MDF depending on span and load. Face frames and doors are solid hardwood. Everything is machined on the same setting so stiles, rails and reveals line through, and shadow gaps stay parallel from one end of the run to the other.
Finish and materials
Finishing happens in the workshop wherever possible. Sprayed paint gives an even film that brushwork cannot match, and the only work left on site is the final touch-in around scribes and fixings.

What timber do you use for painted kitchens?
Tulipwood for the frames and doors, MR MDF for panels. Tulipwood machines to a very crisp edge and does not telegraph grain through paint the way oak does.
Is a bespoke kitchen worth it over a good German range?
A German range gives you excellent engineering in standard modules. Bespoke gives you a kitchen with no filler panels, in the exact colour, using the full height and the awkward corners. In a period house with uneven walls, bespoke is usually the better value; in a square new-build, less so.
What is the difference between in-frame and frameless?
In-frame doors sit inside a solid timber face frame, which is the traditional cabinetmaker's method — it looks better, is more forgiving in an old house, and costs more. Frameless (or full overlay) doors sit over the carcass edge and give a cleaner, more contemporary line for less.
Which worktop material do you recommend?
Quartz for durability and no maintenance. Granite if you want natural stone that will take heat. Solid timber for warmth, accepting it needs oiling and will mark. We fit all three and template through a stone specialist.
Can you match existing joinery in the house?
Yes. We take a profile of the existing skirting, architrave or door and either match it from stock cutters or have a cutter ground so the new work runs identically. Matching an old paint colour is straightforward; matching aged oak takes a sample panel and a couple of attempts, which we build into the programme.
