Cumbria is a county of slate and rendered stone cottages with thick, irregular walls throughout the Lakes. That is exactly the kind of building stock a kitchen island has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
Walls in Cumbria are rarely square and floors are rarely level. A kitchen island that is built in a workshop to a nominal size will show every millimetre of that. We survey first, scribe on site, and finish so the joint line disappears.
How we build it
Carcass work is birch ply or MR MDF depending on span and load. Face frames and doors are solid hardwood. Everything is machined on the same setting so stiles, rails and reveals line through, and shadow gaps stay parallel from one end of the run to the other.
Finish and materials
You can have it primed for your own decorator, sprayed in any RAL or heritage colour, or left in oiled timber. Oiled finishes can be refreshed at home; sprayed finishes are harder wearing and are what we recommend for kitchens and anything at knee height.

Is a breakfast bar the same thing?
Not quite. A breakfast bar is usually a raised section or a peninsula attached to a run. A true island is free-standing on all four sides, and every face of it has to be finished.
How much clearance do I need around an island?
1,000mm minimum on every side, 1,200mm on the side with the dishwasher or oven so a door can open with someone standing there. Below 900mm and the room stops working.
What overhang do I need for seating?
300mm of clear knee space for comfortable seating, 250mm as an absolute minimum. Any overhang beyond 300mm in stone needs steel or a bracket underneath.
How much storage does an island give?
A 2,000mm island holds roughly the same as three base units, more if you use full-extension pan drawers rather than cupboards. Drawers are the right answer in an island — nobody wants to kneel in the middle of a room.
