Worcestershire is a county of black-and-white timber framing, Georgian riverside houses and new-build market towns. That is exactly the kind of building stock a bookcase has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
Every bookcase we make starts with a site survey and a set of setting-out drawings, not a catalogue page. We measure the opening in Worcestershire, check the walls for wind and the floor for fall, then cut a carcass that fits the room you actually have.
How we build it
Timber is chosen for the room it is going into. Painted work is built in tulipwood and moisture-resistant MDF because they hold a crisp arris and take a sprayed finish without grain rise. Where the grain is meant to be seen we use European oak, walnut or ash, with veneers laid so the figure runs continuously across a set of doors.
Finish and materials
Finishing happens in the workshop wherever possible. Sprayed paint gives an even film that brushwork cannot match, and the only work left on site is the final touch-in around scribes and fixings.

Should shelves be fixed or adjustable?
Adjustable for a working library. Fixed housed shelves for a room where the look matters more than the flexibility — a housed joint is far stiffer and lets you run a longer span.
How do you stop books fading?
Keep the run off the wall that gets direct sun, or fit glazed doors with a UV film. Spines fade faster than most people expect on a south-facing wall.
What is the maximum height you would build to?
Whatever the ceiling is. Above about 2,400mm the top shelf becomes a display shelf rather than a working one, so we tend to put the deep, heavy books low and use the top for things you look at rather than reach for.
What spacing between shelves?
Paperbacks need 220mm clear, standard hardbacks 280mm, and large-format art books 350mm or more. A mix of fixed spacings across a wall looks better than every shelf the same, and it stores more.
Can you match existing joinery in the house?
Yes. We take a profile of the existing skirting, architrave or door and either match it from stock cutters or have a cutter ground so the new work runs identically. Matching an old paint colour is straightforward; matching aged oak takes a sample panel and a couple of attempts, which we build into the programme.
