Timber Front Doors in West Midlands

Solid hardwood entrance doors with modern locking and weather seals.

West Midlands is a county of Victorian back-to-back terraces, vast interwar semi estates and 1960s tower blocks. That is exactly the kind of building stock a front door has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.

How we approach it

A front door is a permanent part of the building, so it is worth setting out properly. We take the survey, agree the drawings, machine the parts in the workshop and fit in West Midlands in one visit wherever the programme allows.

How we build it

Timber is chosen for the room it is going into. Painted work is built in tulipwood and moisture-resistant MDF because they hold a crisp arris and take a sprayed finish without grain rise. Where the grain is meant to be seen we use European oak, walnut or ash, with veneers laid so the figure runs continuously across a set of doors.

Finish and materials

You can have it primed for your own decorator, sprayed in any RAL or heritage colour, or left in oiled timber. Oiled finishes can be refreshed at home; sprayed finishes are harder wearing and are what we recommend for kitchens and anything at knee height.

Straight answers

Timber Front Doors in West Midlands — common questions

What timber is best for a front door?

Accoya for a painted door — it is modified softwood that barely moves and carries long guarantees on the finish. European oak for a natural door, accepting it will silver unless it is maintained. Both far outlast standard softwood.

How secure is a bespoke timber door?

As secure as you specify. A multipoint lock into a reinforced frame, hinge bolts, and a three-star cylinder gives you a door that meets the standards insurers ask about. The frame fixing matters as much as the lock.

How long does a front door take?

Eight to ten weeks. The door is made, primed, glazed and finished in the workshop, and fitting takes a day. We can hang a temporary door if the opening cannot be left.

What finish lasts longest outside?

A factory-applied microporous paint system in a mid or light colour. Dark colours on a south-facing door get very hot and stress the finish. Expect to wash it annually and recoat every six to eight years.

How long does a bespoke job take from order to fitting?

Most fitted furniture runs four to eight weeks from approved drawings to fitting day. Kitchens, staircases and timber windows are longer at eight to fourteen weeks because the components are larger and the finishing schedule is longer. We give you a date band at quotation and confirm the fitting week once the drawings are signed off.
