Hertfordshire is a county of garden-city housing, Georgian market-town centres and generous 1960s detached stock. That is exactly the kind of building stock a hardwood porch has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
Off-the-shelf units are made to standard sizes and then filled out with scribe strips. Our hardwood porch work is cut to the dimensions taken from your Hertfordshire property, so there is no packing, no filler and no gap that opens up in year two.
How we build it
Moisture matters more than most people expect. Timber is conditioned before machining, and anything going into a kitchen, utility or bathroom is specified in materials that will not swell at the bottom edge. That is why the base of a well-made unit still closes cleanly after five winters.
Finish and materials
Every finished job gets a short handover: what the surface is, how to clean it, and how to adjust a hinge if a door drops after the heating has been on for a season. Adjustment is normal in timber and takes about two minutes once you know which screw to turn.

Straight answers
Hardwood Porches in Hertfordshire — common questions
Green oak or dried timber?
Green oak for a traditional framed porch — it is worked wet and moves as it seasons, which is expected and part of the look. Kiln-dried or accoya where the porch is enclosed and the movement would matter.
Can a porch be enclosed and glazed?
Yes. Once it is enclosed it becomes a small building — the glazing, the threshold and sometimes the thermal detail all need thinking through, and permitted development limits apply more tightly.
How long does it take?
Seven to ten weeks. Framing is fast; the base and the roof covering are usually what set the programme, and they involve other trades.
Does the frame need treating?
Oak does not. It will silver over a few years and that is the intended finish. Other species need a finish appropriate to their durability class.
What guarantee do you give?
Ten years on workmanship. Hardware carries the manufacturer's warranty, which on good runners and hinges is usually lifetime. Finishes are guaranteed for five years against flaking or delamination in normal domestic use.
