Window Seats & Bay Seating in Glasgow

Storage seating scribed into a bay, with a lid that lifts and stays.

Glasgow is a county of sandstone tenements with generous room heights and original press cupboards. That is exactly the kind of building stock a window seat has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.

How we approach it

Every window seat we make starts with a site survey and a set of setting-out drawings, not a catalogue page. We measure the opening in Glasgow, check the walls for wind and the floor for fall, then cut a carcass that fits the room you actually have.

How we build it

Moisture matters more than most people expect. Timber is conditioned before machining, and anything going into a kitchen, utility or bathroom is specified in materials that will not swell at the bottom edge. That is why the base of a well-made unit still closes cleanly after five winters.

Finish and materials

You can have it primed for your own decorator, sprayed in any RAL or heritage colour, or left in oiled timber. Oiled finishes can be refreshed at home; sprayed finishes are harder wearing and are what we recommend for kitchens and anything at knee height.

Straight answers

Window Seats & Bay Seating in Glasgow — common questions

How deep should a window seat be?

450mm for perching, 500mm to 550mm to sit properly with cushions. Deeper than 600mm and you cannot reach the window.

Can there be storage underneath?

Yes, and it is the main reason to build one. A lift-up lid on soft-close stays is the usual answer for bedding and toys; drawers underneath are better for things you reach for daily.

Can it follow a curved or angled bay?

Yes. A three-sided bay is built in three sections meeting at the mullion lines. A curved bay needs a laminated front rail, which adds cost.

Will the lid stay open on its own?

Yes, on gas stays or friction stays. It is worth specifying — a heavy lid that drops is a real hazard where children are involved.

What guarantee do you give?

Ten years on workmanship. Hardware carries the manufacturer's warranty, which on good runners and hinges is usually lifetime. Finishes are guaranteed for five years against flaking or delamination in normal domestic use.
