Isle of Man is a county of rendered stone cottages, Victorian promenade terraces and rural farm properties. That is exactly the kind of building stock a window seat has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
Every window seat we make starts with a site survey and a set of setting-out drawings, not a catalogue page. We measure the opening in Isle of Man, check the walls for wind and the floor for fall, then cut a carcass that fits the room you actually have.
How we build it
Carcass work is birch ply or MR MDF depending on span and load. Face frames and doors are solid hardwood. Everything is machined on the same setting so stiles, rails and reveals line through, and shadow gaps stay parallel from one end of the run to the other.
Finish and materials
Every finished job gets a short handover: what the surface is, how to clean it, and how to adjust a hinge if a door drops after the heating has been on for a season. Adjustment is normal in timber and takes about two minutes once you know which screw to turn.

How deep should a window seat be?
450mm for perching, 500mm to 550mm to sit properly with cushions. Deeper than 600mm and you cannot reach the window.
Can there be storage underneath?
Yes, and it is the main reason to build one. A lift-up lid on soft-close stays is the usual answer for bedding and toys; drawers underneath are better for things you reach for daily.
Can it follow a curved or angled bay?
Yes. A three-sided bay is built in three sections meeting at the mullion lines. A curved bay needs a laminated front rail, which adds cost.
Will the lid stay open on its own?
Yes, on gas stays or friction stays. It is worth specifying — a heavy lid that drops is a real hazard where children are involved.
Is bespoke joinery more expensive than a fitted furniture chain?
On a like-for-like specification it is usually comparable, and often less. Chains price a standard carcass and then charge for every deviation. A bespoke maker prices the actual room once. Where bespoke does cost more is in the materials — solid hardwood and sprayed finishes cost more than foil-wrapped board, and they last a great deal longer.
