Cumbria is a county of slate and rendered stone cottages with thick, irregular walls throughout the Lakes. That is exactly the kind of building stock a boot room has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
Off-the-shelf units are made to standard sizes and then filled out with scribe strips. Our boot room work is cut to the dimensions taken from your Cumbria property, so there is no packing, no filler and no gap that opens up in year two.
How we build it
Timber is chosen for the room it is going into. Painted work is built in tulipwood and moisture-resistant MDF because they hold a crisp arris and take a sprayed finish without grain rise. Where the grain is meant to be seen we use European oak, walnut or ash, with veneers laid so the figure runs continuously across a set of doors.
Finish and materials
You can have it primed for your own decorator, sprayed in any RAL or heritage colour, or left in oiled timber. Oiled finishes can be refreshed at home; sprayed finishes are harder wearing and are what we recommend for kitchens and anything at knee height.

Should there be a bench?
Yes. A 450mm-high bench with open shoe storage beneath is the single most useful thing in a boot room — it is where boots come off, which is the whole point of the room.
Can you build in space for drying?
A drying zone with a slatted shelf over a radiator, or a rail on a pulley, works well. It needs ventilation — a boot room that traps damp will smell within weeks.
Do I need a separate room for this?
No. A 1.5m run in a hallway or a section of a utility room works. The value is in the arrangement — bench, hooks above, closed storage below — not the square metres.
How high should the hooks be?
1,700mm for adults, with a second row at 1,100mm for children. Adjustable rails are not worth it — fix them, and add the lower row from the start.
Can you match existing joinery in the house?
Yes. We take a profile of the existing skirting, architrave or door and either match it from stock cutters or have a cutter ground so the new work runs identically. Matching an old paint colour is straightforward; matching aged oak takes a sample panel and a couple of attempts, which we build into the programme.
