Cumbria is a county of slate and rendered stone cottages with thick, irregular walls throughout the Lakes. That is exactly the kind of building stock a bookcase has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
Off-the-shelf units are made to standard sizes and then filled out with scribe strips. Our bookcase work is cut to the dimensions taken from your Cumbria property, so there is no packing, no filler and no gap that opens up in year two.
How we build it
Moisture matters more than most people expect. Timber is conditioned before machining, and anything going into a kitchen, utility or bathroom is specified in materials that will not swell at the bottom edge. That is why the base of a well-made unit still closes cleanly after five winters.
Finish and materials
Every finished job gets a short handover: what the surface is, how to clean it, and how to adjust a hinge if a door drops after the heating has been on for a season. Adjustment is normal in timber and takes about two minutes once you know which screw to turn.

Can a bookcase go around a doorway?
Yes, and a bridging section over the door is one of the best uses of dead wall. The bridge is built as a separate deep box so it carries its own load rather than hanging off the uprights.
Can you add a ladder?
For a run over about 2,400mm high, yes. A rolling library ladder on a brass rail needs a solid fixing into the structure above the top shelf, which we plan at survey.
Can lighting be built in?
Yes — LED strip recessed into the front edge of each shelf, wired back to a single driver and a dimmer. It needs a spur planning before we fit, so it is worth deciding early.
How deep should book shelving be?
250mm suits most hardbacks and paperbacks. 300mm takes art and reference books. Going deeper than 320mm just invites a second row behind the first, which you will never see again.
What guarantee do you give?
Ten years on workmanship. Hardware carries the manufacturer's warranty, which on good runners and hinges is usually lifetime. Finishes are guaranteed for five years against flaking or delamination in normal domestic use.
