Essex is a county of timber-framed cottages inland and interwar and modern estates along the Thames corridor. That is exactly the kind of building stock a stallriser has to be drawn around, so we allow for it at survey stage rather than on fitting day — walls get checked for wind and plumb, floors for level, and the setting-out is taken from the worst reading, not the best.
How we approach it
We build stallrisers as cabinetmakers rather than fitters: machined joints, real carcass construction, and a finish applied under workshop conditions before anything reaches your Essex address.
How we build it
Moisture matters more than most people expect. Timber is conditioned before machining, and anything going into a kitchen, utility or bathroom is specified in materials that will not swell at the bottom edge. That is why the base of a well-made unit still closes cleanly after five winters.
Finish and materials
Every finished job gets a short handover: what the surface is, how to clean it, and how to adjust a hinge if a door drops after the heating has been on for a season. Adjustment is normal in timber and takes about two minutes once you know which screw to turn.

Straight answers
Stallrisers in Essex — common questions
Can a stallriser be repaired in sections?
Yes, and it usually is. The panel nearest the door goes first. We replace panels within the existing frame where the frame is sound.
Can you match a fielded panel profile?
Yes, from a gauge taken off the original. Fielded, flat and bolection panels all read differently and it is obvious when the wrong one is used.
How is it finished?
All faces sealed, including the back and the bottom edge, before it goes near the wall. The bottom edge is the one everyone forgets and the one that fails.
How tall should it be?
Usually 450 to 750mm. Too low and the glass takes the damage; too high and the display disappears from view. On a parade we generally match the neighbours so the run reads evenly.
Do you charge for the survey and drawings?
The measured survey and the quotation are free. If you want fully detailed manufacturing drawings or a 3D visual before committing, that is chargeable and the fee comes off the job if you proceed.
